Review: Catbreath – Slice ‘Em All (2024)

“This is the New Claw Order and the rat slaughter will prevail! Slayeresque MaMö -lyrics from the perspective of tomcat Fat Freddy meet the finest crossover thrash ala Municipal Waste or S.O.D.,” is the first sentence in the press release that follows the promo of Catbreath’s new album “Slice ‘Em All.” So here we have a thrash metal band trying their hand at comedy. Both the band name and album title can already tell us that. But the problem is that thrash metal musicians are usually not comedians, and Catbreath doesn’t manage to be particularly funny either. They might have a blast with their friends, but making a thrash metal album with humor isn’t easy. The band is new and actually sounds quite good. They play well, and the band even has tough vocals. But the humor really brings it down. Not because humor doesn’t belong in music, but because bad humor doesn’t belong anywhere. A bit more originality wouldn’t have hurt either.

Released April 5th, 2024 independently.
