During his election campaign, Donald Trump vowed to end the war between Russia and Ukraine within 24 hours. But only the most naive and gullible MAGA supporters could have believed him. Now, just a month later, the war has intensified rather than subsided. Instead of working toward peace, Trump has aligned himself with Vladimir Putin, while launching some of his harshest attacks yet on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The U.S. president recently lashed out at Zelenskyy in a post on Truth Social, calling him a “mediocre comedian” and a “dictator,” even suggesting that he could “end up without a country.”
These inflammatory remarks were part of a statement in which Trump blamed Zelenskyy for convincing the U.S. to spend $350 billion on “a war that could not be won.”
Trump further claimed that the war never needed to happen in the first place and that Zelenskyy would be unable to reach a resolution without U.S. intervention—specifically, his own.
He also criticized his predecessor, Joe Biden, for failing to demand that European nations contribute as much as the U.S. toward Ukraine’s defense. Trump alleged that America has spent $200 billion more than Europe, a claim that does not align with the facts.
Europe Has Contributed More Than the U.S.
Data from Germany’s Institute for the World Economy contradicts Trump’s assertions. Their report shows that European nations—including the EU, its member states, Norway, Iceland, the UK, and Switzerland—have provided Ukraine with €132.3 billion in economic, military, and humanitarian aid. The United States, by comparison, has contributed $114.2 billion.
Additionally, European donors have pledged a further €115.1 billion in future aid, while the U.S. has only committed $4.8 billion in additional support. The figures, compiled by the Kiel Institute, cover the period from January 24, 2022, to the end of 2024.
Despite these figures, Trump insists that the U.S. is being taken advantage of.
“This war is far more important to Europe than it is to us. We have a vast and beautiful ocean that separates us,” he wrote.
“Zelenskyy Is a Dictator Without Elections”
Trump’s most shocking claim was his suggestion that Zelenskyy is a “dictator without elections” and that he risks losing his country if he does not act fast.
“In the meantime, we are negotiating with Russia to end the war,” Trump added, claiming that “everyone agrees that only Trump and the Trump administration can accomplish this.”
However, Trump’s rhetoric ignores the reality of Ukraine’s situation. Holding elections in Ukraine before a peace agreement is reached is constitutionally impossible, as the country’s laws prohibit elections during martial law.
As several international media outlets have reported, elections in Ukraine require soldiers to leave the front lines to vote—an unthinkable prospect while the war rages on.
