Royal Rage comes from Brazil and plays thrash metal. The band started in 2010 as Royal Rampage, but changed its name to Royal Rage in 2017. In 2018, they released their debut album “Conquer”. On the band’s second album, “Evolve,” they explore a dystopian future where humanity is controlled by machines. It’s the classic “Terminator” story. At the same time, they point an admonishing finger—or issue a “wake-up call,” as they state in the press release—at those who are drawn into the digital world and the use of social media and mobile phones. Surely, many will wake up now as Royal Rage highlights these great dangers.
The music of Royal Rage is quite standard modern thrash metal. The sound is solid and thick. Generally, it sounds good in terms of both production and instrumentation. Unfortunately, the songs aren’t much to boast about. They lack originality, and the riffs simply aren’t cool enough. The vocals could also have been more varied. As a result, “Evolve” is an album that I just can’t get into, and it will probably be quickly forgotten by me. More original songwriting would have helped a lot to enhance the band’s appeal. Let’s hope they will craft better songs and riffs in the future.
Released June 11th, 2024 on Sliptrick Records.
