
The Norwegian island of Frøya has been awarded the jury prize for Best European Film Location at the Berlin Film Festival, thanks to its role in the Netflix series Billionaire Island.
The island played a key role in the production, ultimately surpassing strong competition to claim the prestigious award.
The award is presented by the European Film Commissions Network (EUFCN) and was handed out during the prestigious Berlinale Film Festival.
Frøya is the first Norwegian filming location to receive this award.

Director Marit Moum Aune praised the warm welcome from the island’s residents.
“The combination of stunning nature and an incredibly strong willingness and openness among the local population makes Frøya a perfect place to film.”
Last year, the award went to Inis Mór in Ireland, the filming location for The Banshees of Inisherin, according to the EUFCN’s website.
In 2023, three Norwegian destinations were nominated, including Lom in Jotunheimen for the film Troll. This year, the nominees represented five different countries:
