Norway’s hope for a nomination and potential win at the world’s biggest film awards now rests on the shoulders of Armand. Directed by debut filmmaker Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel, the film has already won the “Caméra d’Or” at Cannes. Renate Reinsve, known from the double Oscar-nominated The Worst Person in the World, stars in the lead role.
It came down to three films: Armand, Quisling’s Last Days, and Sex, with Armand ultimately being chosen. Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel, the debut director, expressed his deep emotion.
“We were like a family making this film,” he said.
“A fresh breath of air, a film with stylish daring and impressive performances,” praised the committee.
“Each time you think you know where the film stands, new elements shift our understanding of what actually happened,” Mo added.
Internationally acclaimed Renate Reinsve stars in Armand, which will premiere in Norway on September 27.
The film’s producer, Andrea Berentsen Ottmar, confirms that Reinsve, alongside the director, will be instrumental in campaigning for an Oscar nomination for Armand.
Reinsve starred in Norway’s most recent Oscar-nominated film, the double nominee The Worst Person in the World.
Armand is now being sent to the Oscar Academy for consideration. Like The Worst Person in the World, it heads to Hollywood carrying a prestigious Cannes award, as Tøndel won the “Caméra d’Or” in May for Armand.
The Oscar Academy will release a shortlist of 15 films later this year. In early 2025, five of these films will be nominated for Best International Feature Film.
Producer Andrea Berentsen Ottmar likens the road ahead to a political campaign, similar to the campaign for The Worst Person in the World.
“There are so many players, strategies, and lobbying,” she explained.
The Oscars ceremony will take place on March 2, 2025.
