Hyperia comes from Canada and is here with their third album, “The Serpent’s Cycle”. We’re talking about melodic thrash metal that might remind you a bit of Arch Enemy, although Arch Enemy leans more towards the death metal genre. Perhaps Arch Enemy became a reference precisely because Hyperia also has a female vocalist. Or maybe it’s because the guitars are very melodic. The band plays well, but as a whole, “The Serpent’s Cycle” becomes a bit tiring in the long run. They’re more like shouting than singing, and the melodies are a bit all over the place. It’s a bit too much of a good thing. The band also comes across as a bit rough around the edges. It’s somewhat like a budget version of thrash metal, like a generic brand. Especially when it comes to the artwork and such. But I shouldn’t be too hard on them. It seems like the band is having fun and playing for the sheer joy of it. There’s something unpretentious about Hyperia that has a certain charm. They should also be commended for the Heart cover, “Crazy On You,” which closes the album. It surprisingly works quite well. But I probably won’t be listening to “The Serpent’s Cycle” much more after I’m done with this review.
Released independently on November 17th, 2023.
