The Spaniards in Angelus Apatrida have been going strong for 23 years, and “Aftermath” is the band’s eighth album. Once again, we’re talking about hard-hitting thrash metal of the highest caliber. I’m impressed by the sound and production that the band has achieved on “Aftermath.” This sounds solid and is one hundred percent well-executed. Over the years, the band has developed its own style. Not that they stand out dramatically from other thrash metal bands with a similar style, but they don’t need to. Nevertheless, it sounds fresh, and the album contains many excellent tracks. It’s like a mix of Pantera, Death Angel, Overkill, and Exodus. The band can switch between good melodies and faster tracks, as in the epic “To Whom It May Concern,” which starts slowly, intensifies, and has a melodic, sing-along-friendly chorus. Meanwhile, in a song like “Cold,” we get a very melodic chorus that reminds me of In Flames. So, we have a diverse album here to digest. “Aftermath” works like a charm, and fans of thrash metal and groove metal can safely check out this album. Spain may not be considered a thrash metal hub, but Angelus Apatrida is definitely at the forefront of Spanish thrash metal.
