If you mix slow doom metal with elements of black and death metal, you get Germany’s Morast. Fentanyl is crushingly heavy and imposing. At times, it sounds incredibly intense, even though the production is somewhat lacking. However, Morast has a certain originality that appeals to me, and I can easily imagine this band commanding the stage during live performances.
That said, as much as I can praise Fentanyl, I do find myself growing a bit tired of it over time. After all, it follows a fairly similar pattern throughout the album. But in small doses, Fentanyl works very well, and I think Morast has something solid going on. I gave the same rating to their previous album, Il nostro silenzio, when it was released in 2019, so the band has remained consistently strong.
Released February 7th, 2025 on Ván Records.
