Tyrannic hails from Australia and has previously released two albums and an EP. The duo plays experimental black metal, which they describe as blackened doom metal or doomed black. However, I think doom fans might be disappointed if they listen to Tyrannic Desolation expecting traditional doom metal. While the album features several slow sections, it mostly sounds like early ’90s black metal with unique quirks and experimental elements.
These quirks are what make Tyrannic interesting. Their music takes some time to grow on you. In fact, I found the album rather underwhelming on the first listen. However, after giving it a few more spins, I started to notice the stronger sections and the atmospheres the band is trying to create.
I wouldn’t say I’ve completely warmed up to the album, but there’s something here that makes parts of it enjoyable. That said, there are also sections that feel standard and, at times, quite dull. The production is a bit thin, and the cover art is somewhat comical.
Released November 22nd, 2024, on Iron Bonehead Productions.
