The Polish band Pandemic released their debut album Crooked Mirror in 2023. Now, they’re back with their follow-up, Phantoms. Before diving in, I want to note that the band was formed back in 2015, well before the Covid pandemic. Naming a band Pandemic right after a global pandemic might seem unimaginative, but that’s not the case here. The band already released a four-track EP in 2018.
That EP was the only release featuring guitarist Sebastian Wikar, who tragically passed away from a blood clot the same year, at just 22 years old. However, it’s been some time since then, and the Poles are now back in full force. Pandemic delivers old-school thrash metal—aggressive yet highly melodic. Their sound is rooted in the ’80s, and I’d wager these guys have listened to plenty of classic thrash metal.
Phantoms sounds fantastic, with great production, and the band performs exceptionally well. That said, I doubt Pandemic will achieve significant commercial success right away. The music lacks originality, making it unlikely for Phantoms to attract much attention. Still, if you’re looking for a newer band playing classic thrash metal, Pandemic is a solid choice. A touch more uniqueness would go a long way, and it wouldn’t be surprising if that comes in the future.
Released December 20th, 2024, on Dying Victims Productions.
