Tommy Wirkola and the creator of the Hakkebakkeskogen film have teamed up to create the animated film Spermageddon, about two sperm cells dreaming of fertilizing an egg … but stuck in the body of nerdy Jens. The film is already receiving worldwide acclaim!
The Norwegian animated film Spermageddon is set to hit theaters on January 10, 2025, and has already received praise from international critics after its world premiere at the Annecy Animation Festival in mid-June, where it was met with spontaneous, loud cheers and a standing ovation.
The Hollywood Reporter claims Spermageddon is destined for cult status, while Cineuropa describes it as an “explosive mix of humor, vulgarity, and tenderness.” If you want a taste of the fun, check out the film’s first teaser trailer.
Tommy Wirkola, known for Kill Buljo and Dead Snow, as well as his Hollywood genre films like Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters and Violent Night, has collaborated with co-director Rasmus A. Sivertsen and Qvisten Animation to bring his dream of an animated sperm comedy to life. Qvisten Animation is known for family-friendly films like Dyrene i Hakkebakkeskogen, Captain Sabertooth and the Magic Diamond, Ploddy the Police Car, and When the Robbers Came to Cardamom Town.
In a press release, Wirkola expressed his excitement:
“What an amazing start for our tiny heroes. I still can’t quite believe we got to make something this outrageous and goofy without anyone putting their foot down.”
Though the film is, of course, packed with crude humor, critics note that it’s surprisingly warm and heartfelt, drawing comparisons to Inside Out.
“Our goal was to make a film that is first and foremost funny, going all-out, but we also wanted to create something that strikes a chord with audiences,” says Sivertsen.
Spermageddon follows sperm cells Simen and Cumilla, who live in the scrotum of Star Wars nerd Jens. The chance to leave the scrotum and fertilize an egg suddenly improves when Jens meets a girl, but soon they encounter a threatening world of spermicide creams and other contraceptives.
